A Note to Women Considering Martial Arts Training
I wanted to share a personal note with any woman who’s curious about martial arts but unsure where to start.
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can be intimidating, and I know that feeling well. I decided to try boxing in my early 20s when I was living in Philly, which felt like the right place to start given the city’s long boxing tradition. But the choices were tough: cardio kickboxing classes that didn’t teach technique, or MMA gyms tucked into dark, warehouse-style spaces, filled almost entirely with men. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t know what I was doing. And I definitely didn’t feel confident walking through those doors.
That experience stayed with me. When we started Fight for Tomorrow, we intentionally created something different: a bright, welcoming space where everyone feels seen and supported, especially beginners. Evan has worked hard to build an environment where no one feels judged for being new. In fact, we celebrate it. Everyone starts somewhere, and our team is here to help you grow from day one.
It’s really important to me that women feel safe and comfortable training here. Martial arts have given me much more than I expected; not just the ability to defend myself, but a space to learn, to stay grounded, and to challenge myself mentally and physically. It’s taught me patience, humility, and how to trust my instincts in a whole new way.
If you’re feeling unsure or nervous, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be happy to set up a one-on-one intro to boxing to help you get started. We also offer a fundamental jiu-jitsu class that many women enjoy. I’d be glad to talk through what options might be a good fit for you, whether that’s striking (like boxing or kickboxing) or grappling (like jiu-jitsu). Jiu-jitsu can feel awkward at first, and that’s to be expected. We’ll do our best to pair you with another woman or a patient, experienced partner to help ease you in.
Most importantly: you don’t need any prior experience or a certain level of fitness to start. You just have to be open to learning, and we’ll meet you wherever you are.
Hope to meet you soon!
